This photo taken at the front entrance of a typical Kung Fu Hosue in Taipei. there will demonstration of Kung Fu using sword and other weapons to chop the body but without hurting it no bllod no cut at all. The it was hard selling to guests the tactic used was simple one sales lady to one guests. The chances of guests no buying anythings was less than 5 %. The tour guide and tour operator will earn their profit from such type shopping arrangement. Most of the medicines cannot be effective in curing those uncurable like high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer etc. The shooping includes a Lingzi medical house that calim their Lingzi culd cure cancer and other illments that cannot be cure at all. However our tourists are stupid people especially the old woemn folk they just belive and buy.
However there is no more such shopping in Taipei when I re visited in 1998 and 2001 in facts all the souvenirs are now make in China.
Such type of shopping are now in China I notice it is the same kind of tactics use they must be from Taiwan but now move their operation to China. In China it is the worst tourists are taken to shopping stop of every kind for 4-5 stops per day spending 6 hiurs and sightseeing only 4-5 hours. I will touch on this shopping subject when I start to post for China 1996 onwards by end of the 2009.

Taiwan 1975-1979 Part Two

4.A round Taiwan round Island tours start from Taipei city and outer area Yeliu beach and Yangminshan before going down south. Taichung the next stop travelling using the old north south old roads similar to Malaysia in the 1970 it was just 2 lane with on coming cars, lorries, buses etc and it was very dangerous with daily accidents.
it took more than 5 hours to arrive and Taichung nothing much to see except one make Laughing Buddha the height 3 stories. The next day we  travel to Sun Moon Lake the long journey on mountain winding, narrow roads was same like our Bentong Hill roads to the East coast those days. The journey take more than 7 hours with stop over at small town like our Tapah, Bidor, Segamat etc for toilets stop and drinks etc or shopping for local products mostly handycrafts, fruits and food stuffs. Sun Moon lake quite cooling and hotels are at main street town or facing the lake normally have 50-100 rooms.
Sightseeing including local tribe performance and cruise to a small Island name "KwangWah" and a newly built temple facing the lake. It was another long journey on the road after 2 nights at SML to Tainan town where our famous Admiral Cheng Ho who come to visit ancient Malacca to protect the Sultan from the Siamese army.Admiral Cheng Ho fleet of navy was station in Tainan to defend the attack from Japanese pirates etc.
Here it is famous for tan tan noddles and oyster however you can taste this two dishes in Dragon I restaurant at Mid Valley mall other outlets.
The last stop is Kaoshiung town with it famous Cheng Cheng lake with nine crocked bridge and the famous Tiger and Dragon Pagodas. You must enter the Tiger Pagodas from the tail and exit from the Tiger mouth to prevent bad luck and chase all the bad luck from your body. Next enter the Dragon mouth and exit from the dragon tail bring will bring you good luck. As I was born in the year of PIG 1947 therefore I did not enter the Tiger pagoda or take any photos. I only enter the Dragon mouth and took photos at Dragon pagoda.
For the whole Taiwan you can only get coconut water here but it is very expensive therefore drink sugar water  plenty here and cheap.
The return journey to Taipei  will be by train and it was a whole day journey  but it was  better than bu coach on the narrow trunk roads..I must give my compliments to the Taiwan train services it was comfortable when compare to Malaysia train in 1970. It was fully air con with clean toilet and wide seats, with restaurant service hot meals etc.If  compare to our train services now in 1997 when I took night train and return by day express train to K.L. I still consider Taiwan train in 1970 was still better.

5.Taiwan Hotels in 1970.
The hotels in Taipei we stay mostly 3 stars and the rest in Taichung, SML, Tainan and Kaoshiung are 2-3 star standard. it was difficult to get a job those days in every floor of the hotel thee was a staff to attend to the need of the guests 24 hrs per day. However when revisited in 1999 I was staying in the same hotel call Paradise Hotel in Xinmending the shopping streets. There was no more a floor staff to attend to guest any more. There are plenty of jobs and Taiwan need to import foreign workers since late 1990 onwards. However every alternate floor there a room for guests to get hot, cold drinking water and other can drinks hto and cold plenty of choice inlcuding coffe and tea plus Taiwan Oolong Tea. In fact most of the Taiwan small medium factories was now in China where there cheaper labour force.
There are few international 5 star htoels in Taipei but Malaysia tourists only stay at 3 star hotels due to the budget.
6. Tour Coach use for Malaysia tourists was all re con coach from Japan. Some time during the peak and super peak season there shortage of coaches. Therefore unlucky your coach will break down or no air con times being wasted for repair etc. My re-visit to Taipei to take part in the Taiwan Internationa Wood Ball 97 was quite shocking to me due to fast and more advance in the coach and meals etc provided to tourists. The coaches are 5 star standard same as those in Europe, USA,NZ, Australia.
If you are interested to find out what is WoodBall game please search from the NET.
However for every coach beside the driver there is lady attendant as well. She will be responsible for selling some drinks for customers and give cold tower etc. She also sing a few songs to entertain the passengers and asssit older passengers to get or in of the coach etc.I was given to understand she and the driver sleep in the coach for the nights.I even permit them to come to my room to take bath etc at night other wise they have do it at the htoel toilet. At the end of the tour passengers will collect tipsand hand over to her and driver.
Beside the tour guide there is a photgrapher accompany the tour group and take group photo and also for individaul and sell to the tourists.
6. Taiwan Country side provide me the opportunity to understand how thrifty and hard working the Taiwanese people in the 1960- late 1980 where Taiwan become properous. Every where I could notice all land are fully use for agriculture beside the houses and shops not wasted like what you see in Malaysia.
The Kuonimtang (KTM) that rule Taiwan was have a tight control on economic etc. There was currency control like what was implemented by our Prime Minsiter during the 1997 econpmic turnmoil. Malaysia only allow certain amount ot be taken out of country and must declare. My tours ioperator told me they are only allow USD 500 when going overseas for business. However normally we will settle any outstanding amount when they arrive to Malaysia. The currency exchange rate was 30-35 rmb to 1 rgt and black market up to 40 rmb however now it is less than 20 rmb to 1 rgt. My next posting will be on the sex trade in Taiwan those days where it was a place for men from Maalysia, Singapore and Japan.

Dragon Boat festival

The Chang Festival also come with dragon boat festival where boat with a dragon head races with other dragon boats in lake, river or sea. Qu Yuan after he jumpjump into the river with stone tie around his legs sank into the the river bottom. the people use boats to try and search for his body but after failure to get his body they throw rice dumpling into river to prevent the fishes fromeating his body.
The dragon boat races was born out of this event. it is practice now over the world in many nations. Some even organise dragon boat races for other type of celebration. You can easily search the web site for Dragon Boat Festivals and can the lastest detail.

Taiwan 1975- 1979

My first visit to Taiwan was in October 1975 after the 1oth October or it is call Double Ten celebration for Taiwan independence day. Double ten celebration one week before and after was a peak season in TWN due thousand of overseas Chinese return to TWN for the independence day celebration. In Malaysia outbound tour business to TWN was good with many tour departures.
My party consist of a small group of less than 20 due to it was 10 days later and not so peak.
it was a 8 days round Taiwan island tour that cover Taipei, Taichung, Sun Moon Lake, Tainan and Kaoshiung. During the mid 1970 Taiwan does not have much to offer for sightseeing attractions as most of the temples are new only built in the early 1960 for tourism.
Compare to 1998 there are tremendous changes and developemnet for tourism infasctruture that I can't even beleive it when I visited in 1998. I am shameful that Malaysia tourism from Goverment touisn authourity to the private sector players are still lacking behind Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand. I will take readers into 1975-1979 of Taiwan.

1. There is one very old temple in Taipei city Lung Shun Zi where tourists went to pray before sightseeing in Taipei. The National Palace Museum at any one time display a few thousand Chinese treasures taken over to Taiwan when President Chang lost the war to Coumunist party and use Taiwan for his defence against mainland China invasion with USA backing. It take a few days to explore and see all items display but for tourists just half day or 2-3 hourr to see only some master priceless treasures. The changing of guards at the Martys Shrine was very interesting it is similar to London Buckimham Palace changing guards. We were takem to see the Grand Palace Hotel built by the First Lady it is a 5 star hotels with many display of antigues etc take photos etc. A few shopping stop was arranged mostly selling traditional medicine with demonstration of Kung Fu, jewellery make form coras or star precious stone which are not genuine plus handicrafts and local food stuff etc. Yamingshan was the next visit it is near Taipei where you can see hot volcano (extint) but still wtih smoke and boiling water etc.
2. Out of Taipei visit will to the Yehliu beach water front to see the rock formation of different animal and human face shape. The most famous was a lady head where every one wanted to take phots.
3. The bread fast was taken outside the hotel at local restaurants specialise in offering Taiwan bread fast like the porridge  and soya milk with buns make from green  and red bean etc. Customers can select sweet or salty taste and it was a must for Asia tourists maybe it is cheaper than having breadfast at hotel. The lunch and dinner again was out side restaurants. A Mongolia BBQ was included and this restaurant was pack with tourists from over the world. However the lunch and dinner was consider poor after the my 3rd town visit customers started to notice that every where you goes including other town taichung, Tainan , sun moon lake, Hualien ( East Coast) and Kaoshiiung all the restaurants servce the same type of dishes same type of soup with eggs, same kind of fish cook in same taste, the vegetable was worst our poor man kangong etc. rice was half rice and half barley as it was government rules to be thrifty. However at the night market food stalls there are plenty of local tasty foods for you to choose but don't choose cockle it was very expensive due to no cockle in Taiwan or less. The shopping disteict at Ximenending selling clothes ( design and fashion consider poor standard) all goods make in Taiwan no imported good.

CHANGS ( Dumpling)Chinese festival

TO day 28th May 2009 is the Chinese Dumpling festival it is celebrated on the firth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calender. In Mandarin call Zongzi and in Cantonese Chang.
The festival is celebrated in rememberance of QU YUAN , a scholar in the kingdom of CHU during the warring states period ( The Three Kingdom) in 340BC-278 BC. The old emperor listen to Qu Yuan therefore the Chu kingdom ws strong but after the emperor die his son become emperor who prefer to ignore Qu Yuan and listen to other scholars. Finally Chu kingdom was taken by the Qin kingdom.
Qu Yuan was  so sad seeing his Chu  Kingdom gone decided to drowned himself in the river after writing a poem. He tie some stone in his legs and jumped into the river.
The people respected him so much and afraid that the fishe would eat his body decided to make dumpling from rice and throw into the river for the fish.
The ingredients use are glutinous rice, pork, chestnuts, mushrooms, and black eye bean, red bean, green bean could be use. some include scallop, abalone and other type expensive ingredient and curry favours etc.

My wife learn the learn the art of making dumplings chang from my mother and my 2 daughter also learn from their mother. However living in the city is totally different from living in a Chinese village where pratically every houses make their own dumplings and there was excahnge form one another. I still remember during the Chnag festivals my mother make more than 200 dumplings not for sales but mostly giving to neighbours and relatives and they in return also give their own dumplins to us. Therefore there are so many variety and favour  to taste and eat for days.
What I am afraid this Chinese customs and festival will become history as the new generation of city living people are so buy working and spending most of their time on the road traffic jam etc and It savvy etc does not have the time to learn or practice dumpling making or obeserve the various Chinese custom a festivals.
In the early 1990 every years I have the opportunity to eat the dumpling from Vietnam in fact all the Vietnamese practice and making dumpling in a square shape and big each dumpling for 4-6 people to eat.
I am not sure about USA, Australia , UK maybe my friends over there will let me know. However I sure Chinese overseas do celebrate Chinese New Year.

 SEOUL in Mid 1970.
Seoul city in the mid 1975 was much more develop than Kuala Lumpur. There are not branded car manufacturers like now such as Hyundai, Kia etc exporting cars worldwide some car model selling well.
There isn't much to offer in term of sightseeing attractions only those ancient temple and emperor palaces but a well know Walker Casino where as Malaysia only casino Highland maybe starting to built a small narrow road up to the top. The cultural show was very good at Walker Hill casino where tourists all went to see plus dinner.
Seoul city was a new popular place for the men from Malaysia and Singapore to seek sex it was so cheap at USD 30 per night. However by 1988 the price shot up to USD 500 per one time it is beyond the reach of men from Malaysia. All this due to Korea already become a wealthy nation and no more a poor nation in the 1970-80. It export practically every things like the Japan, cars, electric products, machinery etc to the world.
However the tourism also totally changes with many new attractions inclduign opening more and develope tourism sightseeing places plus theme park etc.
Every year since my first trip in 1975 I visited Seoul and other cities Kwangju, Pusan, Ulsan upr 1987 one year before the 1988 Olympic Game. In 1987 there so many changes that I already admire how fast the city is growing and expanding. I will write my travel Korea base year to year basis there equally many excitng incidents to write about.Just watch out for my encounter in a barber shop for hair cut, the cowboy ginseng party house, the night l;ife at the famous Itaewon shopping street by day and night life as great and hot as Bangkok red light district.

SEOUL and GINSENG Party.
Our CX/MAS airline tours second stop after Tokyo was to SEOUL again our party was put up in 5 str SEOUl Plaza hotel at the down town shopping area. next was the Lotte hotel and shopping mall wiht underground  shop and sub way train station that connect to other part of the city. There are plenty of shops selling everythings from foods, souvirnirs, soft toys, branded shoe Nike, Reebook and La Gear etc
At night we were taken to the famous WALKER HILL Casino for the dinner show and then transfer to a Ginseng house for the famous Ginseng party. This house was in the out skirt of the city with ncie garden and ancient Korea style design. We were all seated in a big room and then about more 20 Ginseng ladies come into our room. It is up to the guests to selct the lady that he wanted to be his companion for the Gparty.
I was not aware what it is about and did not do any selection but the old timer like Stanly Chen from Chan brother Travel select one lady for me that same lady in the picture.
The lady then sit beside the guest on the left side and Koean snacks were service about more than 20 variety of small dishes in small plates. For drinks there choices of soft, beer and Korean tea and the rice wine.
There was a band to play music and ladies will sing songs.
I just point out what dishes I wanted to try but I am say the taste etc quite difficulty to except the famous Kimchi fermented vegetables with garlic and chilli are quite different to our hot and spicy curry and I am say most of us only have a bite for each dishes. However I try a bite on all the dishes some a OK to me.
The party lasted 1 hour only as the season travel agentc eager to go back to hotel.
Next the veteran season old timer travel agent boss started to select their ginseng lady for the night by giving their room no and hotel name to the Mama san in charge of the ladies. I was the only one who did not select any lady but the veteran just select the one dancing with me and told me it is a must to give face to host CX/MAS. I was told the price was USD60 for the whole night. We all went back to the hotel by van and I went straight to my room and lock the door.as I only have USD 100 for the whole dutration of the tour and already spend USD 30 in Tokyo buying some small souvirnirs.
It was about 45 minutes near mid night when there was knocking at my door but I pretend to sleep however about 10 minutes the Stanly Chan and another old timer knock hard at my room door and force me to open. They just push the lady into my room and told use it or still need to pay the USD60.
I just don't have the mood at all to make love with the nice ginseng lady who think I was sick. She use hot tower for my forehead and also message me etc.
However after an hour or so still could not sleep and think about the USD60 do it or don,t I still need to pay. I finally decided do it and then went to sleep. I wake up maybe after 2-3 hours looking at the beautiful Koren lady I said to myself why I am so stupid. One time also 60USD why do a few time?
So I ended doing more than 3 times.
The next morning at the coffee house for breadfast the veteran old timer call me the US sixty dollar Men.
The veteran knowing that i was a first time overseas and with only 10 left decided to pass the hat around and finally collected USD100 for me. To this day I am grateful to them for make my balance holidays in Seoul a happy one as I still have some pocket money for drinks snack etc while out for sightseeing.
Our visit was the next 3 days was Kyongbokkung palace, national museum located inside the palace ground, war mueseum where there display of weapons, rocket , tank and plane use duirng the US/ South Korea and North Korea war. We also visited the Namdaemun market where there a few hundred stall selling clothes, flowers and foodstuffs and virtually everthings. It is a place for the local and tourists.

Every year during the month of MAY the terrible racial riots that people killing people for nothings remind me of the incidents that rocked the nation and the world.
What happened 40 years ago on 13 MAY 1969 is history but some politician say it is better to forget and look forward however some say we need to be reminder to prevent what happen again our nation can't afford to have one more time.

On the dreadful day 13 May I was returning from airport after the one night duty till morning. The department van drop me and my Malay colleague on the Federal way near section 8 BB primary school. We took a bus to PJ old town and I walk home my Malay colleague walk home staying at the Malay residence area behind the cinema oppositie the bus station.
By afternoon the news like wild fire was out about the killings and finally the racial riots that rock the nation. Curfew was impose and everyone started scramble for iron pipe etc whatever they get to defend their home if the attack come from the Malays. We formed our own defend to protect wooden houses.Group of various shifts was organise to do round the clock vigilant etc.
On the 3rd day suddenly a police car and police land rover with arm police stop in front of my house. It was very tense and the people staying near my house was getting ready to defend etc. A police officer step out and call my name and I saw my immigration inspector in my team as well.I came out to greet them and they told me to pack up with daily use item like tooth paste, tooth brush, soap, tower blanket jacket etc for duty at the airport for a few days. I put on my immigration unifrom with cap plus bring a spare uniform as well.
There at the airport we work for 5 days 24 hrs per day but there was no flights coming from overseas except from Singapore mostly overseas journalist etc and some local residents urgent return home to see that their family OK etc.
Our meals are all taken care and provided with the generous Singapore airlines bringing extra meals for us and other s like custom , health, and special branch all working side by side with us at the booth at the arrival hall.
There was only a relief team to replace us on the 6th day. For the next next 2 months our department van with police car pick us and drop us at out house for duty. A few months later for those who work at the airport for days during the curfew we were given a color full certificate sign by the King. However my surname was spell as CHENG instead just CHEN and MENG instead of MEN. I sent it back for new one to be issue but it never come.
The first thing I do upon reaching home was to buy some can food etc out on my uniform and use my brother bike and went to my girl friend house at OUG old Klang Road about 10 minutes. She was so happy to see me after we lost contacts for a week. She still can't goes to work at the Teacher training college at Pantai area a very hot are during the racial riot.
I prpose to her for marriage and she OK.We wanted to be on 13 May 1970 but our parent stronly objected and finally it was on 9th May 1971.
This May 13 happen to be our 38 wedding anivesary base the Chinese date calender. It also happen that on this 13 May our nation have the first case AH1NI.
I suppose this is GOD will to remind us to live peacefully.
To day I decided to talk about 1 subject instead of my travel which going to take times to complete as it is going to be more than 35 years of trying hard to remember what happened long ago.

1. I was at the LCCT ( Low Cost Carreir Terminal) to sent my daughter WE LIN to Mel by Air Asia flight no 2722 to MEL and then she connect Emirate fight to Auckland. According to Australia Embassy since trantsit with 8 hrs no visas require for her to check out and re check in for the next flight to NZ.
However at the check in counter the Air Asia staff told her due AK no arrangement with other airlines to save operation cost as such she need a viss to check out and recheck in at the Melbourne airport.
She was refer to an Australia Embassy staff who station there to provide assistant to AK passengers who encounter such type of problemns.
He advise We Lin to apply online for landing visas using her laptop ( apple) at the coffee bean with WIFI)  after a few try she can't get online therefore went back to see the embassy staff. He was so helpful after getting all her particulars just the Canberra Immigration HQ and a 1 year visas was granted to her and she just wait for 5 minutes and re check in at the counter successfully.
I must give due respect for Auustralia Embassy K.L to station a staff to asssit AK passenger for any type of visas or other problemns create Air Asia due it is a low cost airline that wanted to reduce total operation cost as such over pass other type important services that their passengers require or cannot board the flight due to the problemn.
It just show how the Australia government , immgration offcie in Camberra plus Austalia Tourism Board value tourists money into their country. I could remmber working closely with WATC, Victorai Sate tourism, NSW tourism and Gold Coast etc for their full co operation when promotion of tours to Australia.
For more than 10 times I have been invite to attend various education torus to AUS including outback etc plus numerous toruism workshops and trade fair for all overseas travel agents. The most famous and effective was the ATE Austalaia Tourism Exchange for one week where buyers meet sellers in pre appointments etc. The meals are all VIP meals plus 4-5 stars hotels etc.
Ivited particapants (buyers) are also given free torus beyond Sydney or after the ATE. In this way overseas buyers have the great opportunites to promote other palces normally not visited by Malaysia tourists.
I hope our new Tourism Minister DR NG will further look into how to solve some of the problemns in Malauysia Embassy overseas or any Malaysia Toursim pormotion officies. She can learn from the Australia authority.

Some of the stickers are very humour and good to laugh at it. E.G HANG LOSE! YOU TAKE CARE OF ME and I TAKE of YOU.
YOU BE NICE to ME I BE NICE to YOU. I LOST MY A in LAS VEGAS. There are also stickers for all sightseeing attractions, cities etc.

My first overseas trip was not USA/Canada but to Toyo and Seoul just after 3 months joining a travel agency in K.L. in 1975 March. The Boss sent me to MAS/CX education tour for Bosses of 12 top travel agencies only. However I am the only junior one in the party to replace my Boss after he told MAS/CX I was their super sales executive. It was 5 star VIP treatment all the way. staying at 5 star hotel and good foods plus sightseeing attractions and entertainment.

We first landed in Tokyo staying at the New Otani with beautiful japanese garden and waterfall. it was sightseeing to Tokyo Tower, temple, Ginza shopping and cultural shows at night. I am like a mouse deer first entering a village tasting Japanese foods and Chinsese deluxe dinner etc.
The crowded Ginza shopping area with plenty to see and just looking at the packing was enough so interesting to look and nice to hold in your hand. I learn by just walking through the departmental store super market etc you could just taste plenty of food offer for tasting. After a few super market you actually fill your stomach so I suppose ther is no beggars in Tokyo or no body die of hunger. It was only 3nights 4 days in Tokyo but that was good enough to further encourage me see the world as much as possible. I know if wanted to succeed I must work very hard and smart to get it.

My interest to travel to see the world started while working as Immigration Officer stationed at the Kuala Lumpur 1st International Airport at SUBANG.
I joined the immigration department in 1996 after 3 months training on the job at the HQ office in Kala Lumpur near the Railway station. I was transfer to the International Airport. It was from 1966 -1974 and I resigned in early 1975 to join a travel agency in K.L.
Working at the international airport was an eye opener for me to know the wide world is for to see. What happened was during one free afternoon we are free to talk while waiting for the next plane arrival from overseas. One of my colleague said why we our signature fly around the world in the tourists passport after we chop and sign?
One word led to other words I was challenged to be the first to see the world. I accepted the challenge without hesitation. Thus embark my vision to do so as early as possible.
I already put into my aim and action as early as the 3rd year after working at the airport. I make a lot of friends from commercial houses and mixed well with all airlines airport station manager and others.
The contacts I well establish were proven to be my platform for a successful career in the travel industry in the later years.
I apply for my first Malaysia International Passport on 26Nov 1974 with my occupation as Immigration Officer the validity was for 5 years expires in 26 Nov 1979.
This passport was proven to very effective when using to travel overseas as the airport immigration officer who check and stamp clear my passport always smile and talk to me. I make quite a lot of friends with other immigration officers during the 5 years travelling to Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, Philippines and Indonesia.
